While Alex works with a range of concerns in therapy, some have been a particular focus of his clinical and research training as a psychologist. The topics below reflect areas where he has developed deeper experience and expertise.

  • Alex specializes in therapy for anxiety-related concerns such as panic, phobias, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety. He has published multiple book chapters, peer-reviewed studies, and presented at national conferences on anxiety, fear, and trauma. He currently serves on the clinical steering committee for the Exposure Therapy Consortium, an international organization devoted to the study, education, and dissemination of exposure-based therapies – one of the most effective treatments we have in mental health. It’s fair to say he thinks about anxiety more than most people do.

  • Certified in pain reprocessing therapy, an evidence-based approach to chronic pain, Alex collaborates on research and treatment programs aimed at advancing modern pain science through ongoing university partnerships, alongside years of direct clinical experience working with chronic pain populations. Using a mix of the neuroscience of pain and modern behavioral science, he focuses on helping people understand why pain persists and how to change the processes that keep it going.

  • Alex has advanced training and clinical experience in the treatment of insomnia and circadian rhythm-related sleep problems. He works with individuals whose sleep has become difficult, inconsistent, or frustratingly unpredictable, helping them rebuild stable sleep patterns through evidence-based behavioral approaches to sleep treatment. In his work with military service members, where sleep is the most common mental health concern, he has seen time and time again how restoring sleep can meaningfully improve mood, focus, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

  • Drawing on advanced clinical and research training – including published research and book chapters on purpose and life engagement – Alex works with individuals who feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about their direction or purpose in life. He helps clients clarify what matters most, examine behavioral patterns that may be holding them back, and move toward a life that feels engaged, meaningful, and self-directed.

  • Having served as a psychologist in the United States Navy, Alex brings extensive experience working with active-duty service members and Veterans. His background provides direct familiarity with military culture, its intersection with mental health, and the distinct challenges that arise during both service and transition. Let’s just say he’s learned to question whether “I’m good” actually means you’re good.

While these areas reflect some of Alex’s primary clinical and research interests, people rarely fit neatly into a single category. Many of the challenges people bring to therapy involve overlapping concerns including those listed above – anxiety, chronic pain, trauma, sleep difficulties, fear, or questions about direction and meaning. Alex works collaboratively with clients to understand the patterns shaping their lives and to help them move toward meaningful and lasting change.
